Blog social networking has become quintessential in today's world in both corporate/business and personal life of people. Social networking was initially introduced for the purpose of communicating with people or long lost friends but as time went on people started to recognize the power and influence of social media which led to its exponential growth and at the same time a darker side of social media was also brewing.
Social networking helps people connect to a wide array of individuals and if used properly can help a person obtain a job. "One of Crawford-Hentz's favorite sites is Linkedin, a network of 8 million professionals spread across the world. Linkedin says users include executives from all of the Fortune 500 companies. Typing keywords into a search engine, Crawford can scrape the entire network to dig out high-quality candidates that she can't find elsewhere."(Social) Linkedin is the most famous website used when it comes to profiling a individual based on their work experiences which could lead to the hiring of new employees.Linkedin makes it easier for a recruiter to go hundreds to thousands of people's information without much hassle compared to the old school method of waiting for a resume and going through it to contacting them through a call. Linkedin makes it readily accessible for someone to communicate with each other regarding a job without much hassle.
One of the biggest issues with social media is privacy. Companies such as Facebook is known for its lack of privacy and data mining. "Facebook hopes to one day sell advertising across all of its partner sites and apps, not just on its own site. The company will be able to draw on the immense volume of personal data it owns to create extremely targeted messages. The challenge: not freaking out its users in the process." (Great Wall) Facebook and now a days almost all websites and social media platforms take part in data mining. The purpose of data mining is for websites to recommend certain ads or target ads based on the preference of the user or the search history of the user. This leads to the issue of privacy. Almost all companies know every single move you make on their platform and often times it is violation of a person's privacy but companies have found a way to go around it.
In the future social networking might be only platform used for interviews and maybe it might become the only way through which a lot of people work. As for data mining, companies will become more and more daring with regards to our privacy and there will be a greater influx of targeted ads. In short, big companies will gain a lot more power.
