Blog Vs Wiki

Blogs and Wikis are two interesting tools that we use to communicate for our daily usage. Blogs tend to be more personalized and is often used as almost a modern day personal online diary. Blogs more or less represent a brand. A lot of companies also have blogs where they post information about something upcoming and or some promotion(Cook). A blog is like the soul of person but on the internet and visible to everyone. A wiki is more of an encyclopedia. It is a process of accumulating and maintaining information (Difference). It is a collaborative work between various groups of people. A wiki helps in collecting and sorting out information related to specific topic. It's like a never-ending cycle where you could go from one place to another on a wiki.

In today's world convergence has become a important aspect especially in the social media world. Companies such as Facebook buying Instagram and Whatsapp shows how important it is for companies and people to know where the information they are getting from and whether it is reliable or not. Uniformity of various ideas is trying to become the norm as it is hard for people and companies to know the credibility and reliability of the information they are receiving.

Blogs can be used for collaboration by people viewing the blog and leaving comments on it and the person in charge of the blogs making changes deemed necessary to them. I think wiki has almost been used every way possible by now. The only change it could possibly make is to become a tool that is fact checked and reliable to the extreme without any bias.

For my idea it's pretty simple. It's a crime detection app. This will let us know if any crime is happening around us presently but keeps the parties involved anonymous or ones that have happened in the past. This could be useful if someone is travelling to a new place and doesn't know anything about it. This will let them know if the area they are living in is safe or dangerous. This app should be run with police as they encounter all of the crimes at a certain place. Maybe it could be run by people but verifying the authenticity of crimes reported could be hard.

Advice

One of the easiest ways and tools can be used to improve online communication between professors and students is Zoom. Zoom is easily accessible and easy to use compared to another tool which Blackboard collaborate. Also to increase engagement between students and college is if the college runs TikTok as it is becoming more and more popular.  If possible Baruch could collaborate with some store for example and have a raffle where the winner wins a prize from the company. (ex: Baruch could work with an apparel company and a certain student wins a hoodie if they share a certain post or something).

Privacy

One of the major issues that occur with privacy is the collection of data or as companies call it big data. Companies are tracking every single one of our moves and often times we are helpless. They often times are lobbyists for politicians who they use to push their agenda. If there is a hack or some sort of loss of information millions of lives of people will be exposed to unwarranted threats.  Another issue that comes with privacy and new media is the fact that anything you post on social media is not private. Once you post something on the internet it stays there forever. Especially kids in college can make questionable choices in their early 20s that can affect the rest of their lives. Companies can find out what type of person you are and a past mistake can be troublesome for your future job application processes.
